The Royal Edinburgh Hospital project was part of a 10-year programme to reshape and remodel mental health services within Scotland’s capital.
The first phase of the programme created 15,000 sqm of inpatient facilities, including the adult acute mental health inpatient service, a psychiatric intensive care unit, older people’s mental health assessment and the Robert Fergusson national brain injury unit. The buildings incorporate extensive landscaping and natural materials in internal courtyards in an effort to create an open therapeutic environment for all patients.
Off-site manufacturing was utilised extensively. With the majority of the buiding single storey, a timber-frame solution with pre-cast panelling was suitable, cutting programme time, while additionally pre-fabricated bathroom pods and modules for the mechanical and electrical system were also used.
The project was heavily influenced by a comprehensive stakeholder engagement process with over 3,000 visits taking place by members of the public over the duration of the programme.
