Morrison Construction’s Highland business, in partnership with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, was selected to complete a project to provide squadron accommodation and maintenance facilities for newly reformed IX(B) Squadron and 10 Typhoon aircraft, as part of a wider £550 million infrastructure investment in RAF Lossiemouth.
Lossiemouth is the Main Operating Base (MOB) in Scotland, with the Typhoon aircraft based there employed 24/7 to carry out the UK Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) securing the UK skies.
The works included a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing hangar which upgraded the structure and fabric of the building and replaced all existing services. Two new build annexes have been constructed, the first housing headquarters and administration functions, mission planning, briefing, launch and aircraft recovery, and the second engineering facilities, workshops and stores.
A unique feature of the hangar fit out was the provision of a state-of-the-art aircraft fire suppression system. The Morrison team engaged closely with client, specialist sub-contractor Armstrong Priestley and the operational end users to develop a bespoke solution which meets the requirements of the RAF.
Our delivery team met the unique challenges of working within a live RAF base, including security, control of FOD and logistics – which included the creation of a temporary entrance to RAF Lossiemouth for the use of all works traffic during the overall Lossiemouth Development Programme. The specialist knowledge of working in a secure environment allowed our team to address key issues including Counter Terrorism provisions and secure document sharing systems.
