The Grade B-listed Dunoon Primary School was extended and refurbished by Morrison Highland over three phases to provide a modern school, while retaining the historic character of the original.

Dunoon Primary School is a fine example of the board schools which were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and makes good use of a variety of international architectural motifs. The building is large and imposing, with the tower a striking landmark feature. Dunoon Primary demonstrates the architectural quality these buildings could display, particularly at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries.

As design and build contractor, Morrison worked exhaustively with the client to identify suitable work scope which meets the client brief and requirements of Historic Scotland. The quality of the completed project was recognised with Dunoon Primary School receiving a commendation in the prestigious “Scottish Design Awards 2021”

The school was required to remain open throughout much of the construction, which resulted in an intricate phasing of works from the outset, beginning with the refurbishment of the original building. The Covid-19 pandemic lockdown also caused an inevitable delay, but the team still managed to deliver the school by November 2020.

Dunoon Primary School holds a position of historic significance within the town and its preservation was imperative for our community. The newly built wing of the school marries seamlessly with the original building while clearly not striving to replicate. It is in this aspect that the new building design most significantly embodies the ethos of Dunoon Primary." Brenda Reid Head Teacher, Dunoon Primary School
