Sector Schools and Colleges

Location Central Scotland

Value £13m

This brand-new purpose built primary school, constructed for West Lothian Council, provides primary education for up to 462 primary and 128 nursery pupils.

A state-of-the-art facility with strong environmental credentials, the new school features a vast external teaching and play space and a digitally-connected, internal environment featuring breakout learning zones and open plan classrooms. The school incorporates low energy features including mechanical ventilation heat recovery units and Solar PhotoVoltaic panels to power and heat the building.

The highly-efficient school design has also been developed with expansion in mind in order to cope with the ever-growing Calderwood community. As such, one of the gable walls has been designed to allow it to be removed when school capacity requirements increase and an extension can then be seamlessly incorporated into the existing facility.

A vital component within the Winchburgh and Calderwood school programme, this new facility serves the new village of Calderwood, being located as a central hub within the new community. The school was Highly Commended in the Education Project category at the Scottish Design Awards.

You can already see this superb new building is providing the foundations for a fantastic new school community, where our children can start the journey to achieve their potential." Cllr Lawrence Fitzpatrick Leader, West Lothian Council
