The state-of-the-art Cairn Distillery is located in Grantown-on-Spey and was completed on behalf of the client, family-owned premium spirits business, Gordon & MacPhail.
The distillery’s sensitive location within the scenic Cairngorm National Park demanded very careful planning of the extensive earthworks and water abstraction required for the project.
The whisky distillery is sited on the River Spey, one of Scotland’s most iconic salmon fisheries, and features a sedum green roof, already home to a colony of bees, as well as nature trails created along the river banks.
Also included in the project were whisky-tasting rooms, a visitor centre with retail space, and a coffee shop.
During construction, a bottle of Benromach whisky was placed in a cavity to pay homage to Gordon and MacPhail’s first distillery at Forres.
The project was carried out by Morrison Construction’s Building Highlands business, who have had experience in distillery projects in the past.
