The new £11m West Calder High School extension has reached its final milestone, marking the successful completion of the project that will provide outstanding new facilities for pupils and staff.

The two-storey extension, which was delivered on time and on budget, increases the school’s capacity to over 1,300 pupils and provides enhanced facilities to support STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning. The new block includes multi-purpose collaborative learning spaces, specialist teaching areas for science, technology and computing, and an accessible outdoor learning space on the roof.

The extension was required to meet rising pupil numbers as a result of local housing developments and was specifically planned into the original school design when it was built in 2018.

The project has been a unique collaboration across several Galliford Try businesses, with Morrison Construction Building Central acting as main contractor, Facilities Management continuing to provide FM services, and Galliford Try Investments Consultancy Services (GTICS) supporting with construction, FM and financial management expertise. It was delivered on behalf of West Lothian Council by development partner Hub South East.

Provost Cathy Muldoon commented: “The outstanding new extension at West Calder High School is providing excellent facilities that will support our young people in key subjects and create inspiring spaces to learn, collaborate and achieve.”

Phil Harris, Managing Director for Galliford Try Investments, added: “West Calder High School is a fantastic example of the strength of collaboration across our business. By bringing together expertise from Morrison Construction, GT Facilities Management and GTICS, we were able to deliver a seamless approach that will support the client throughout the projects lifecycle. This integrated way of working allows us to create long-term value for our clients and the communities they serve.”

David Ewing, Managing Director of Morrison Construction Building Central, said: “We are proud to have delivered this important project for West Lothian Council and to see the new facilities now in use by pupils and staff. The extension not only provides modern, flexible learning spaces designed to inspire, but also demonstrates the value of collaboration between our teams, our partners at Hub South East, and the client. It is a great example of how we can deliver sustainable, high-quality educational environments that will benefit the community for many years to come.”
