Three members of the Morrison Construction Environment team have been awarded the Scottish Water iGEM (Going the Extra Mile) Award in recognition of their exceptional work and outstanding customer service delivering the Sanday Whale Community Project.
Drew Mackie (Construction Manager), Christina Calder (Innovation and Performance Manager) and Matthew Anderson (Project Manager) were nominated for their work on the project, which reclaimed a coastal site for public use on the Northern Orkney Isle of Sanday, that had previously been used by client Scottish Water to dry and store sludge from the production of drinking water.
Morrison Construction and Scottish Water worked with the community council in a collaborative approach to restore the site at Backaskaill Bay to offer improved amenity for both residents and visitors.
The transformation was kick-started by creating a car park, capping and landscaping the non-hazardous sludge beds, planting trees and natural grass, and providing picnic benches and information boards explaining the island’s heritage. A life-size whale sculpture commemorating a marine wildlife tragedy was also unveiled at the site.
Jane Chilton, Digital Communications for Scottish Water, who worked with the team to capture the story behind the project, was very impressed with the whole team delivering this project who went the extra mile to deliver it to a very remote community, prompting the decision to nominate the team for these awards for exceptional customer service.
She said: “It was clear the team cared about providing the best service to our customers, while enhancing Scottish Water's reputation. They were all inspiring and fully delivered on value for the business. But most importantly their care shone through each and every individual. It was a pleasure to work with them.”
Commenting on the award nominations, Drew Mackie said: “I am extremely proud that myself, Christina, and Matthew have received this recognition for our project in Orkney. The life-size sculpture and the other aspects of the project bring social value back to the community and bring the disused site back into the public realm.
“My thanks to all involved who were instrumental in the design and build of this community-focused project, delivering the best level of service for our Environment business in Scottish Water.
“Customer and community engagement is core to what we do at Morrison Construction, and we are delighted to have received these awards to recognise their outstanding contributions to the local community.”
