Morrison Construction has been actively supporting the next generation of construction professionals through a five-session skills programme at Dingwall Academy, in partnership with DYW Inverness and Central Highland.
Running from January to March 2025, the initiative provided fourth-year pupils with valuable insights into the construction industry, career pathways, and hands-on experience ahead of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which took place in early March.
The programme kicked off with an introduction to Morrison Construction by Construction Director and former Dingwall Academy pupil, Gordon Williamson. He highlighted the diverse career opportunities within the sector, followed by an interactive health and safety virtual reality session led by Alastair Gill. The pupils then visited the live Blend Centre project at Invergordon Distillery, where they engaged with Site Manager Michael van’t Zand and Assistant Site Manager Conor Flint, gaining first-hand insight into construction roles.
Gordon returned to conduct mock interviews, offering valuable feedback and CV advice. During the week itself, Joiner Corey Marshall and Apprentice Joiner Olivia Macgillivray spoke with pupils about their experiences, providing a real-world perspective on apprenticeships.
The programme concluded with a second visit to the Blend Centre site, allowing students to see the project's progress and deepen their understanding of construction processes. Encouragingly, all participating pupils expressed interest in work experience with Morrison Construction, with many set to apply for the company’s Apprentice Joiner position.
Donald McLachlan, Managing Director for Morrison Construction Highlands, said: “We are committed to inspiring young people to explore careers in construction, and this programme has been a fantastic way to engage with the next generation of talent. It’s been great to see their enthusiasm grow over the sessions, and we look forward to welcoming them for work experience and hopefully as future apprentices.”
