Morrison Construction’s Building Central business has been appointed by Midlothian Council to undertake the major refurbishment and extension of Penicuik High School.
The appointment marks a significant milestone for the project, which will see the existing 1930s school building carefully refurbished alongside the construction of a new three-storey extension to replace the current 1960s block. The development will create a modern, flexible learning environment while preserving the character of the historic building.
The design centres around a new internal hub formed from the original assembly hall and courtyard areas, which will be transformed into enclosed, multi-use spaces for dining, sport and events. Once complete, the school will accommodate up to 945 pupils, including specialist provision for those with Additional Support Needs, and will offer facilities for wider community use.
Preparatory works are now underway, with the main construction programme due to begin in summer 2026. The new school building is expected to open in spring 2028, followed by demolition of the existing 1960s block and redevelopment of the surrounding grounds.
Midlothian Council Cabinet Member for Education, Ellen Scott, said: “Appointing the main contractor is a major step forward for the Penicuik High School project and for the whole community. It is exciting to see the project moving into the construction phase and to watch the new school begin to take shape.”
David Ewing, Managing Director for Morrison Construction Building Central, said: “We are delighted to be working with Midlothian Council on this important project for the Penicuik community. This scheme brings together the careful refurbishment of a historic building with high-quality new construction, creating a modern, inclusive learning environment that will support pupils and staff for years to come.”
