Sometimes life presents us with moments that can shape our future in ways we never anticipated. For Cameron Lawson, a young and ambitious individual, such a moment arrived during an encounter with Morrison Construction's Communities and Social Impact Team at a careers event, which the team attended due to the start of the local Jackton Primary School project. This brief interaction would ignite a passion for civil engineering, propelling him towards a career with Morrison Construction.

As part of Morrison Construction’s continued engagement to make a difference, the team organised on-site mentoring for pupils interested in a career in construction organised for the Jackton Primary School project. Cameron was among those who began to meet monthly with Stephen Wilson, a Senior Civil Engineer for Morrison Construction, to observe Stephen in his role, and talk about his career and ask any questions that he had.

Cameron also had the opportunity to meet with Dennie Gillespie, from Morrison Construction’s Communities and Social Impact team, to help him with writing a strong CV, interview practice and learn about what it is like to be an apprentice.

Following these sessions, Cameron then applied for a graduate apprenticeship with Morrison Construction, which is a Scottish Government brand of apprenticeship, where the student is able to work in paid employment while completing a university degree. His degree of choice was Civil Engineering, and following his initial application, he was shortlisted for an interview.

The news then arrived shortly after that Cameron was successful in his interview and was offered a place on Morrison Construction’s graduate apprenticeship programme, with a start date of 31 July.

When asked what this chance meant to him, Cameron commented: “I feel really honoured to have the opportunity to show my work ethic and how much I want to be part of this industry. Taking part in this journey has really cemented that this is the right career path for me, thanks to the insights I received from Stephen and Dennie.

“I feel the work experience has given me confidence moving from school to site - everyone was really supportive and welcoming. I have gained some skills in the basics and have a good idea what to expect moving forward.

“I am looking forward to starting this journey and appreciate the time and effort everyone at Morrison Construction have put in to assist me moving forward.”
