Morrison Construction’s Building Central team has been recognised for its innovative and sustainable work with the retrofit of The Resident Edinburgh at this year’s Scottish Design Awards.

The Resident Edinburgh, formerly known as Meldrum House, has been transformed from an outdated 1950s’ office building into a modern hotel to preserve Edinburgh’s architectural heritage.

The refurbishment involved retaining the building’s existing structural frame while reimagining its layout to meet the needs of a new contemporary hotel.

Designed by MLA Architects, The Resident Edinburgh features a reception area, lounge, and bar on the ground floor, with guest rooms occupying the upper levels, offering a mix of modern amenities within a historic building.

The retrofit has led to a 40% reduction in embodied carbon emissions compared to a traditional demolition and rebuild, making it a significant achievement in both design and environmental impact.

Commenting on the award shortlist, David Ewing, Managing Director for Morrison Construction Building Central business, said: “The Resident Edinburgh is a fantastic example of how thoughtful design, collaboration and sustainable construction can breathe new life into a building. The transformation delivered a visually striking and environmentally responsible building that blends seamlessly with the surrounding Victorian architecture. Good luck to the team at the Scottish Design Awards in June.”

The awards ceremony will take place on the 25 June at the Double Tree Hotel Hilton, Glasgow.
