The Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme is not only the largest flood scheme in Scotland, it is also the largest civil engineering project within Moray. On completion, the scheme will protect 600 homes and 250 businesses, and it will cope with 190m3 per second of floodwater - something that is expected only once every 200 years.

During the open doors weekend, visitors received a short presentation and safety induction before heading outside on a site tour, where they were able to see the flood relief channels and walls and find out how they will mitigate future flooding.

Members of the Morrison team were also on hand to talk about the wide range of jobs and careers the construction industry has to offer.

Speaking of the event, Allan Russell, Construction Manager at Morrison Construction, commented: "The team here on site were delighted to be able to offer school children and the wider public the chance to explore our diverse industry and witness activity on a live construction site. We hope that everyone took away an understanding of what is involved to construct a project on such a grand scale.

"As a company, we want to make a strong, positive impact on our local community and we are extremely glad to have the school children visit the site to showcase how a real construction site works and the different skills required, giving them an insight into the careers available within our industry."

Richard Lochhead MSP commented, "I was delighted to be able to visit the site of the Elgin Flood Alleviation scheme, which will provide much needed flood defences in the Moray area. This is another example of successful partnership working between a local authority and construction company, underpinned by Scottish Government funding, and I look forward to seeing the finished product.

"It was also a great opportunity for me to meet with school pupils from the local Alves Primary School to witness the future stars of tomorrow gaining an invaluable insight into the world of work and gaining an understanding of the vast range of careers opportunities within the construction sector."

Morrison Construction are working in partnership with Moray Council to develop five schemes in Lhanbryde, Forres, Rothes, Findhorn and Elgin.
