The £50m Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme is part of the Moray Flood Alleviation Schemes. It will protect 600 homes and 250 businesses when complete, and it will cope with 190 tonnes per second of floodwater - something that is expected only once every 200 years. The works comprise the construction of a flood relief channel along the line of River Lossie through Elgin, and the construction of reinforced concrete floodwalls at several locations throughout Elgin. The existing Pansport Bridge has been demolished and replaced by a new two span road bridge.

A number of properties were demolished throughout the works and extensive utility diversions and drainage works are taking place. Approximately 30,000 trees will be planted during the construction period. The project, which is the largest flood scheme in Scotland, will provide a minimum flood defence standard of 1 in 200 years plus climate change and is due for completion in May 2015.

Allan Russell, Construction Manager with Morrison Construction, said: "Many congratulations to all those involved with this project as it is due to their hard work and dedication, working closely with our neighbours, which has enabled us to receive this prestigious award. Our award-winning site has proven its commitment to considerate construction and continues to set ever higher standards. I would like to congratulate all on their hard work and dedication towards improving the image of construction. We were delighted to be presented with the award and strive to achieve further awards in the future."
Dave Gowans, Project Director, Moray Council, said "The Silver Award was a well-earned recognition for the site team's efforts. Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme is a four and a half year project covering a vast site, much is interfacing with the public on a daily basis. The award recognises not just the consideration given to everyone working on or affected by this massive scheme, but also to the years of careful pre-planning of every activity through early contractor involvement.

"As a client we are delighted how well Morrison Construction have performed, the health, safety and welfare record, and their contribution to the community and the local economy. Add to that how the team mobilised to make sure over 200 homes were protected well before the scheme was operational - and we are also £3 million under budget. A great team effort!"
