Westminister Academy

Galliford Try has constructed the Westminster Academy, a City Academy which facilitates up to 1,175 students. The site is extensive for a city school and includes eight sports pitches, recreational zones and a community sports centre, with dance studio and team changing areas.

The main building features an underground car park and the ground floor comprises of a large lecture theatre, drama studio, library and atrium with breakout space and a cyber-cafe. The first and second floors each have classrooms and practical rooms, laboratories, workshops and studios, while the top floor includes a performing arts area, dining spaces and staff and sixth form lounges.

All the new facilities will also be available to local groups and businesses, as the building becomes a hub of community activity and will contribute to the regeneration of Westbourne.

The striking academy has been recognised for its high architectural standards and its substantial contribution to the local environment through the Royal Institute of British Architects’ award for London Building of the Year 2008. Designer Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHHM) won its category for the project, having already won the Inspiring Design – Secondary School category at the British Council for School Environments award.
