Company History
Galliford Try’s origins can be traced back to the early years of the 20th century. In 1908, Mr W S Try bought out his original partner and formed a construction business that carried out work in the west of London. In 1916, Mr T J Galliford set up a building business in the village of Wolvey on the borders of Warwickshire and Leicestershire. Both businesses grew successfully, taking advantage of the increased expenditure on construction work during the Second World War and afterwards. Galliford became a public company in 1965 with Try Group going public in 1989.
In September 2000, Galliford and Try merged to form a construction and housebuilding group with a contracting business based in the North and South of England as well as the Midlands and with housebuilding in the South East, South West and Eastern counties of England. The Group’s turnover in 2001 was £570 million.
Since the merger, the business has expanded both organically and through acquisitions. In construction, the Group purchased Morrison Construction in 2006 which brought a strong national civil engineering capability to the Group, a leading Scottish building business and a complementary expertise in private finance initiative projects to add to Galliford Try’s existing business. Kendall Cross, a Newcastle-upon-Tyne based affordable housing contractor, purchased in 2007, added to the Group’s coverage of this growth market in an area which it had not previously been represented.
In housebuilding, Gerald Wood Homes, a specialist housebuilder in the South West of England, was purchased in 2001 and in 2006 Chartdale, a Lincolnshire based housebuilder was acquired and integrated with Galliford Try’s housebuilding business in the eastern counties, Stamford Homes. In 2007, Galliford Try acquired Linden Homes, a complementary housebuilding business based across the South of England and filling in geographic coverage in Central, South and South East England.
Galliford Try is now one of the leading construction and housebuilding groups in the UK.
